Introduction

                                   (by Sri Hunsur Sriprasad)

The term ‘tatva’ has many meanings, but in the context of vedanta it is used to indicate a true (or real) fact or entity. Since knowledge of the basic entities is the foundation for true knowledge, most schools of philosophy have a work that lists the main entities figuring in their doctrine along with their inter-relationships. This is called Ontology. This helps adherents get a better understanding of the concepts outlined in the new doctrine.

Sri MadhvAcharya has tackled this issue in his own unique way. Until his advent humanity did not know that there was a major work called tattva viveka, authored by Lord VishNu Himself, which is supposed to be the ultimate authority on Ontology. Since this had become extinct he resurrected a few key verses from this and called the work as tattva viveka. This is one of the several extinct documents and references that he has resurrected through his works. Next, he composed a companion work called tattva sankhyAna, which complements tattva viveka and helps us get a better understanding of the subject. Since tattva viveka is the reference for tattva sankhyana there is no question of punarukti (needless repetition).

In this short work, shrI MadhvAchArya  has given a complete description of all entities in the whole universe. Different types of reality have been enumerated and classified into independent (Svatantra) and dependant (Paratantra). Lord Narayana, the Supreme God alone is independent and all other categories are dependent on Him.
